Abstract: This article analyzes the evolution of the research in urban and regional science in Italy in the period 1991-2000 situating it in the international context. With this aim, we first elaborate rankings of countries, authors and institutions in function of the publications carried out in a sample of nine top regional and urban international journals. Second, we compare the publication patterns of Italian authors with the ones observed at the international level. The results show that Italian¿s share in regional and urban research has been relatively low during the considered period (especially when compared to other disciplines). However, Italy was placed between the most productive European countries during the first half of the nineties. The analysis of publication patterns of Italian contributions compared to international ones has also shown some light on the peculiarities of Italian regional and urban research.
