n this article we present the results of a recent work on the long term mechanisms of innovation and performance in Europe (Bogliacino and Pianta, 2009b). CIS data from different waves have been assessed as an instrument to understand the evolution of innovative patterns in the long run, confirming the validity of it. Moreover, a model is proposed, that is deemed to capture the complexity of the innovation-performance relationship, passing through a structural modeling of the various steps and taking into account not only the linear dynamics, but also the feedback effects. We analyze the econometric results, with particular emphasis on the policy implications.
